Release notes for major upgrades to VDI

Q2 2021

What you need to know about VDI Q2 2021 upgrade

The NCI VDI has undergone upgrade to VDI to give users dedicated resources and make the system much easier to install.

What is the difference between the old and current VDI?

  1. CPU and Memory resources are dedicated to each user session
  2. Compute (CPU and Memory) size is selectable when launching a new VDI Desktop session
  3. Strudel has been replaced by Open OnDemand, a web-based method to interact with your VDI session

Is Python2 supported on the Q2 2021 VDI?

No. However, the python2/2.7.17 module is still available for minimal transition of old python scripts.

Default group/shell changed

Some users did not specify which group they wanted and the Q2 2021 VDI did not choose the correct one by default.  You can change this in your .rashrc file in your home directory.  See the Gadi user-guide for details on how to configure this (https://opus.nci.org.au/display/Help/Raijin+User+Guide Login Environment section).
