CMIP data - as well as other key climate data collections - is distributed via the Earth Systems Grid Federation (ESGF) which forms a collaboration of internationally distributed data nodes. NCI manages the ESGF Tier 1 data repository that serves the Australian climate science community.

Request to Publish at NCI

Please note: External users who do not currently have NCI access and who wish to publish CMIP data through NCI may contact help@nci.org.au to request further information.

To publish CMIP and related data (e.g. CORDEX, GeoMIP, etc) at NCI, we request that the data owners maintain the high standards expected by the ESGF. In particular:

  1. Data Conformance

    1. The data owner is expected to conform with the requirements and expectation for CMIP6 Modellers (https://pcmdi.llnl.gov/CMIP6/Guide/modelers.html). E.g. application and documentation of the standard forcing used, appropriate grid structures, all necessary variables and time ranges, etc.

  2. Scientific Evaluation

    1. We expect the model output to have undergone some form of scientific quality control to ensure the robustness of the model data.

  3. CMOR Compliant

    1. The data should be CMORised to conform with CMIP6 ESGF criteria.

Once you are satisfied that your data is ready for publication, please contact help@nci.org.au to begin the publication request. NCI will perform additional quality control and quality assurance checks on the data to ensure its conformance to ESGF standards. Once all QA/QC procedures are complete, the data will be published to the NCI ESGF node, the NCI THREDDS Data Service and appear in the Geonetwork metadata catalog.

CMIP6

Australian CMIP6 Data

Currently registered Australian CMIP6 contributions include:

  1. ACCESS-CM2
    1. DECK, and historical and SSPs have been completed.
    2. For more information see the NCI Data Catalogue ACCESS-CM2
  2. ACCESS-ESM1-5
    1. Both DECK and historical runs will be completed with C4MIP, CDRMIP currently in preparation.

This data is now available. NCI users will need to join fs38 to get access to this data. The data will be published on the NCI ESGF Node for additional access.

About ACCESS-CM2 and ACCESS-ESM1.5

ACCESS-CM2 and ACCESS-ESM1.5 differ in their atmospheric component. ACCESS-CM2 uses a current configuration of the Unified Model (UM), while ACCESS-ESM1.5 uses an older UM configuration, close to that used in ACCESS1.3 for CMIP5. For this reason, ACCESS-CM2 has a larger climate sensitivity (2xCO2 ECS=4.7K) than ACCESS-ESM1.5 (2xCO2 ECS=3.8K). ACCESS-ESM1.5 simulates the carbon cycle and consequently additional carbon-related variables are included in the ACCESS-ESM1.5 dataset. C4MIP and CDRMIP experiments will also be available for ACCESS-ESM1.5.

For more information about the Australian CMIP6 data see the NCI Data Catalogue - CMIP6-era

CMIP5

Published Australian CMIP5 Data

Under CMIP5, NCI is the primary source of data for four published coupled models from the Australian climate science community:

Other MIPs

NCI has also publishes data contributing to CORDEX, GeoMIP, and other MIPs as required. Currently published datasets, available on /g/data/r33, include:

  1. CORDEX – data on AUS, AUS-44 and AUS-44i under a range of models and forcing.
  2. GeoMIP – From CSIRO-Mk3L-1-2, a part of the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP).
  3. PMIP3 – From CSIRO-Mk3L-1-2, a part of the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project (PMIP3).
