The NCI ERA5 data collection is a major international collection of interest for Australian researchers for both high performance computation and data analysis. These datasets are widely used in scientific analyses and environmental modelling.

ERA5 Overview

European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ReAnalysis 5 (ERA5) is the fifth generation of ECMWF atmospheric reanalyses of the global climate. The ERA5 Family consists of:

  • ERA5 is a comprehensive reanalysis, from 1979 (soon to be backdated to 1950) to near real time, which assimilates as many observations as possible in the upper air and near surface. The ERA5 atmospheric model is coupled with a land surface model and a wave model.
  • ERA5.1 is a re-run for ERA5, for the years 2000 to 2006 only, which was produced to improve upon the lower stratospheric cold bias evident in ERA5 during this period. Behaviour of ERA5 in most of the troposphere is similar to that in ERA5.1.
  • ERA5-Land is a land surface dataset, from 1981 (soon to be backdated to 1950) to present time (2 months in arrears), produced at higher resolution (9km) and forced by ERA5 atmospheric parameters with lapse rate correction, but with no additional data assimilation.
